i think the biggest invention in history of human existence has been invention on Fire. Fire helped human not only in sustaining its existence (by providing protection, warmth, energy) but also in discovering or inventing many other things. if you look at any of modern thing, each and every thins has got involvement of energy in its production. and energy comes primarily from Fire.
The biggest discovery in historry of mankind has been of himself,his capabilities to develop. That actually is the mother of all other inventions.
According to me it should be internet. This invention even though known less is a very important tool for nations and their people to cross borders and interact without limits. This has led to many inventions there on.
With no second thoughts, i would name the wheel. It has made the life of humans so much more easier. Automobiles,planes or any material object capable of moving uses this concept.

Cant break it to 1 entry. I consider there are atleast 2 inventions that would make it to the list. 1 would be telephone by mr. bell and electricity by Mr. faraday. We owe all our resources to these. Infact I am a electronics & electrical engineer. that for the explanation.
Acc. to me it should be Agriculture as it has actually triggered the emergence of Man as social animal from the stature of what we know as the primitive man. I feel it has led to many further development once Man's Need of hunger was satisfied.
